About

It all started as something of a throwaway line on a typical Monday morning in the Riello UPS offices.

“Could there ever be a blackout that big it causes the whole of the UK to have a power cut?”

Several other queries quickly followed.

What could possibly cause such a widespread network failure? What’s the likelihood of it ever happening? How long would it take to turn the lights back on? Could our society cope without the electricity that powers our day-to-day lives?

From such seemingly inconsequential questions came the concept for the Blackout report

We wanted to think the unthinkable. Attempt to answer all the “what ifs”.

The end result weighs in at more than 14,000 words and 50+ pages.

It’s also led to this website, which gives us the opportunity to dig deeper into the wider world of electricity and power grids.

We’ll bring you the latest power news and keep tabs on any big blackouts that take place throughout the world as and when they happen.

We’ll look back at some of the biggest blackouts in history to see whether there are any lessons we can learn.

And we’ll also provide in-depth power insights where we explore some of the fundamental aspects of electricity networks as we move into an era of smart grids and zero-carbon power generation.
